Usually, brain drain occurs from developing countries to advanced ones. The Royal Society of Britain coined the term "brain drain" to describe the migration of scientists from the United Kingdom to the United States and Canada in the 1950s and 1960s.
Causes of Brain Drain:
There are multiple reasons that lead to brain drain from one's country to other countries, but they can be divided into two main categories: push factors from the home country and pull factors from the destination country. Push factors include lack of resources and opportunities, poor economic conditions, high unemployment rates, limited research and scientific capabilities, and sometimes political instability or lack of livelihood security. On the other hand, pull factors include reasons related to the country attracting talents to migrate to it, such as providing better job opportunities with higher salaries, a higher ceiling for intellectual freedom, cultural richness, development of educational systems, and providing a better quality of life for skilled and knowledgeable individuals.
Ways to Reduce Brain Drain:
Some methods can help reduce brain drain, including:
- Improving education: Some brains migrate due to the inability to access quality education and emerging specializations, or the inability to complete higher education in their own country.
- Providing support: Brain drain often occurs due to the lack of support provided to them, such as insufficient funds allocated to support scientific research, poor infrastructure like a lack of laboratories and other research facilities for them to conduct their experiments and research. This pushes them to migrate to more advanced countries in search of support. Governments should consider providing support by increasing access to important research information, providing suitable research infrastructure, and more, which could be a long-term solution to reduce brain drain.
- Appropriate incentive policies: Salaries and financial incentives are among the most important economic factors that lead to brain drain. It is important to ensure that payments are organized, and attention is paid to providing appropriate cash incentives as needed.
- Providing distinct job opportunities: Many people choose to migrate due to the lack of suitable job opportunities for their capabilities. Governments should provide sufficient and satisfying job opportunities in all areas of life and provide suitable conditions for them to be able to innovate and thrive in their work and society.
